We stock Linear-compatible weldments and fabricated gate components at our Torrance shop, and most welding and fabrication repairs run between $180 and $650 installed, depending on the extent of the work. If you’ve got a broken weld on a slide gate frame, a cracked hinge mount, or a bent operator bracket, we can usually get a technician to your Torrance property the same day. Most owners discover the failure when the gate starts grinding against its own track, sags visibly at the free end, or refuses to close all the way because a welded joint has let go.
Salt air off the Pacific accelerates weld failure here in Torrance faster than inland neighborhoods. We see it constantly: a weld that looked fine for eight years suddenly splits because moisture worked into a pinhole and corroded the joint from the inside out. By the time the gate sags or binds, the weld has usually been failing for months.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s swing and slide gate operators, including the LRA, LSO, and SlideRack series, all bolt to fabricated steel brackets and welded gate frames. The operator itself is rarely the problem when a weld fails: the issue is almost always the fabricated component that carries the load. That includes slide gate trucks and their welded mounting plates, idler wheel brackets, catch posts, and the structural stiles of the gate itself.
Identifying your part starts with the Linear operator’s model plate, mounted on the inside of the control box or on the operator chassis. But the welded component often carries no part number at all, which is where measurements matter. We match by overall length, tube or plate thickness, bolt-hole spacing, and material weight. For Linear gates specifically, two compatibility gotchas come up often in Torrance: first, older SlideRack units used 3/16-inch wall tubing on the rack support, while newer production moved to 1/4-inch, so a replacement bracket that fits one will not fit the other without reaming. Second, many Linear swing operators ship with a universal clevis bracket that expects a 5/8-inch pin, while some fabricated aftermarket equivalents use a 16mm pin. That 0.8mm difference causes slop that wears the hole egg-shaped within a year. We match OEM-spec dimensions or fabricate to the original drawing, because guessing on metal thickness is how you get a repeat failure.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the free end. A cracked weld on the hinge stile or a failed corner joint lets the gate’s own weight pull the far end down. The gate still opens and closes, but the latch no longer lines up and the operator works harder every cycle.
- You hear a creak or pop when the gate starts moving. That sound is a broken weld flexing under load. It may not be visible yet, but every open-close cycle is widening the crack.
- The gate binds at one spot on the track. A welded slide gate frame that has cracked near the truck mount will twist slightly under its own weight. The twist shows up as a consistent hang-up at the same point in the travel, every time.
- Rust streaks run from a welded joint. This is the salt-air signature on Torrance gates. Rust bleeding from a weld means moisture has entered the joint and the weld is corroding from the inside. The visible rust is often only the top of the problem.
- Bolts on a welded bracket loosen repeatedly. When a welded operator bracket develops a hairline crack, the plate flexes under load and works bolts loose no matter how hard they’re tightened. Re-torquing helps for a week, then the slack returns.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Torrance, most Linear welding and fabrication work falls into three price bands. A single bracket or hinge tab replacement, cut off and welded fresh, runs $180 to $300. A mid-size repair, such as replacing a cracked slide gate truck mount or rebuilding a sagging corner joint with a reinforcement plate, runs $300 to $500. Full fabrication of a new gate leaf or a complete rack support assembly lands between $500 and $650 for a standard residential opening. The spread comes from material thickness, access, and whether we’re working with galvanized steel (common on older Torrance installations) or raw steel that needs primer and paint after welding.
Every price is written down and agreed before the first arc is struck. You’ll see parts and labor separated on the quote, and the number does not move at the door. Our welding and fabrication work carries the same written guarantee as everything else we do: a full year, covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a weld fails inside that year, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things before calling: run your hand along the welds you can see and feel for a hairline crack (it’ll catch a fingernail), look for rust streaks, and note whether the gate sags with the power off. What you should not do is attempt to weld a gate in place yourself. Welding on a gate that is still hung, still under tension from its own weight, or still wired to a Linear operator is dangerous. A gate leaf that breaks free during a bad weld can injure anyone in its path, and a weld that fails at the wrong moment turns the gate into a falling load. The work needs proper rigging, the frame needs to be squared and clamped, and the operator needs to be disengaged and locked out first.
If you’re in Torrance and you’ve found a cracked weld or a bent bracket, call us at (424) 757-9824. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a simple bracket swap, a weld repair, or a full fabrication, and we’ll give you a written price before any work begins. If the gate isn’t right, we’re not done.
FAQs
A properly welded steel gate in Torrance lasts 15 to 20 years before welds need attention, but the salt air shortens that to 10 to 12 years if the gate was never primed and painted after fabrication. Galvanized gates hold up longer, but the welds themselves are the weak point because the galvanizing burns off at the weld and must be re-coated with cold galvanizing compound or the joint rusts first.
Most cracked welds can be ground out and re-welded, often with a reinforcement plate added for structure, unless the surrounding metal has thinned from corrosion. If the steel around the weld is pitted or flaking, welding to it makes the problem worse. We’ll tell you which situation you have before any work is approved, and the written price reflects the actual repair, not a guess.
A single bracket replacement takes one to two hours on site. A mid-size weld repair with grinding, welding, and re-coating runs two to four hours. Full fabrication of a new gate leaf is measured and built at our Torrance shop, then installed on a scheduled day, usually within one to two weeks. We’ll give you the timeline in writing with the quote.
Our trucks carry common Linear bracket plates, hinge tabs, and slide gate truck shims, plus steel stock in the most common Torrance sizes so we can fabricate a replacement component on site when it makes sense. If your gate needs a full leaf or a custom rack support, we handle that at the shop and schedule the installation. Either way, call (424) 757-9824 and we’ll tell you what’s possible before you commit to anything.
