Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Torrance Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Torrance typically runs $185 to $340 installed, and in most cases we complete the swap the same day we arrive. The part itself is usually $90 to $160, and labor runs $95 to $180 depending on how the wiring was originally run. What we hear most often from homeowners in Torrance is that the keypad works intermittently for a few weeks, then quits entirely, usually right after a rain or a stretch of damp coastal weather.

Ghost Controls builds their keypads and intercoms to a residential price point, which means the housings and membrane switches are the weak spots. Salt air off the Pacific accelerates that wear. We see more keypad failures in neighborhoods closer to the coast, places like Seaside Ranchos and Hollywood Riviera, than we do up around Old Torrance, where the air sits a little drier. The symptoms are easy to spot once you know what to look for.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

This page covers the keypads and intercom modules used with Ghost Controls residential gate operators, including the AXP1, AXP2, TSS1, and TDS2 series. The keypad part number you’ll see on the back of the housing typically starts with AXPK or GCPK, and the intercom picks up as GCI or GI, depending on the year it was made. Ghost Controls changed their plug connectors around 2019, so a keypad meant for a pre-2019 board will not seat correctly on a newer control board without an adapter harness. That’s the compatibility gotcha we run into most often in Torrance.

To identify what you have, look at the back of the keypad or the bottom edge of the intercom box for a white sticker with the part number and a build date. If that sticker is gone, the connector shape tells us most of what we need. The older units use a 4-pin flat connector; the newer ones run a 5-pin with a locking tab. When we match a replacement, we always verify the connector before we order or pull anything off the truck, because guessing here means a second visit and a gate that still does not open.

As for OEM versus aftermarket, we install Ghost Controls OEM parts when the board and wiring are original and in good shape. For older systems where the OEM keypad has been discontinued, there are quality aftermarket equivalents that work reliably, but they are not all built the same. Some of the cheaper units sold online use thinner membrane layers that crack within a year in full sun. In Torrance, where a south-facing keypad can sit in direct sun eight months out of the year, we will not install a part we know is going to fail inside twelve months.

One thing to be clear about: Carver Gate Repair Torrance is an independent gate repair company. We are not affiliated with Ghost Controls, and we do not claim to be. We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible parts because these systems are common across the South Bay, and we know them well enough to fix them correctly the first time.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate does not move. The membrane still reads your touch, but the control board is not receiving an output signal. This usually points to a broken wire between the keypad and the board, or a dead output relay on the keypad itself.
  • Some digits work and others do not. The carbon contacts under the membrane wear unevenly, so the numbers you use most, like the first and last digits of your code, stop registering first. A new membrane is the fix, not a new board.
  • Keypad works after a rain, then stops when the sun comes out. Moisture bridges a cracked membrane and temporarily completes the circuit. Once it dries, the connection opens again. This is the classic intermittent failure pattern we see throughout Torrance, especially after the marine layer burns off.
  • Intercom hums or buzzes on the handset side. A failing capacitor in the intercom module is the usual cause. It is repairable at the board level in some cases, but on most residential units the module swap is cheaper than bench time.
  • Gate opens on its own after a hard rain or heavy sprinkler overspray. Water gets into the keypad housing and shorts the access output. This is not a ghost, it is a seal failure, and it means the keypad needs to be opened, dried, resealed, or replaced before the gate cycles itself enough times to burn out the operator.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Torrance, a Ghost Controls keypad replacement with labor lands between $185 and $260 for a standard single-gang surface-mount unit. An intercom module replacement runs a little higher, $220 to $340, because there is more wiring to land and a second device at the house side to verify. If your system uses the keypad and intercom in one housing, which Ghost Controls did on some TDS2 packages, expect the combined job to run $260 to $390.

The range comes down to two things: how the original installer ran the wire, and whether the mounting surface is wood, stucco, or masonry. A clean through-wall wire run with an accessible junction is a twenty-minute swap. A keypad that was surface-wired with staples and silicone, buried behind a gate post, takes longer to do properly. We do not charge extra for the fact that it is Tuesday. We charge for the work, and you see the written price before we start.

Every keypad or intercom repair we do at Carver Gate Repair Torrance includes the part, labor, wiring verification, and a written guarantee good for a full year. If the part fails inside twelve months, we come back and make it right at no charge. That is the Garrison Standard, and it applies to every repair, no exceptions and no fine print.

You will also get the price in writing before any work starts. The number we quote is the number you pay. If we open the box and find something that changes the work, we stop and talk to you first. No surprises at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnostics on a Ghost Controls keypad without opening anything that carries line voltage. Check the obvious: fresh batteries in the keypad if it is a wireless unit, no debris packed into the keypad seam, and no visible cracks in the housing. If the keypad is hardwired, check that the breaker for the gate operator is on and not tripped.

What we do not recommend is opening the keypad housing or pulling wires off the control board if you are not familiar with low-voltage gate wiring. The board terminals are tight, they are easy to short, and a misplaced wire can send voltage where it should not go and take out the operator board. At that point, a $200 keypad swap becomes a $600 board replacement. If you are comfortable with a multimeter and you know which terminals are common, normally open, and normally closed, you can likely handle the swap. If that sentence did not sound familiar, call us at (424) 757-9824 and we will get you sorted.

Lonnie Burke has been working on gate systems across the South Bay for more than two decades. He has pulled apart more Ghost Controls units than he can count, and if there is a wiring quirk specific to how these were installed in Torrance tract homes, he has seen it. If the gate is not right, we’re not done.
