Get your free estimateGhost Controls Gate Motor Replacement: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
If your Ghost Controls gate opener has stopped responding, a motor replacement typically runs $450 – $950 installed in Torrance, and we can usually get it done the same week. The most common tell is an opener that hums or clicks but won’t move the gate, or a gate that starts, stalls, and reverses mid-travel. We keep Ghost Controls-compatible motors and gear assemblies on the truck for the most common residential swing and slide models, so we’re not ordering parts and hoping they show up three weeks from now.
Most Torrance homeowners discover the failure in the worst possible moment: leaving for work with the gate half-open, or getting home after dark and watching the arm twitch instead of swing. The good news is that Ghost Controls motors are a straightforward replacement when the rest of the operator is in decent shape, and we diagnose the whole system before recommending the swap so you’re not paying for a motor when the real problem is a limit switch or a failing control board.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls sells through a few main lines: the AXDP and AXP series (automatic gate openers for residential swing gates), the SLDP and SLP series (slide gate operators), and the newer TSS1 and TDS1 kits that package the motor with the arm and hardware. The motor itself is not a universal part. A Ghost Controls AXDP motor will not bolt into an SLDP chassis, and older first-generation boards use different motor connectors than the current run.
To match the right part, check the label on the underside of the operator housing. The model number is printed there, usually starting with the series code (AXDP, AXP, SLDP, SLP). If the sticker is sun-bleached or missing, the motor shaft size and bolt pattern tell us what we’re working with. Ghost Controls has changed motor specs at least twice since 2010, and mixing a current revision motor with an older arm assembly can cause the gate to overshoot its travel limits. We verify compatibility before ordering anything.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Ghost Controls OEM motors are reliable, but the aftermarket has caught up on the AXDP and AXP lines with motors that meet the same torque spec at a lower price. We have used both and will tell you honestly which makes sense for your gate’s age and duty cycle. For slide operators, we stick with OEM or known-good equivalents because the gear interface tolerances are tighter.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Humming or clicking with no movement. This usually points to a seized gear assembly or a burned-out motor winding. The capacitor is often blamed first, but if the capacitor tests fine, the motor itself has failed.
- Gate starts to move, then stalls and reverses. In Torrance, salt air accelerates corrosion on the motor’s internal brushes and commutator contacts. The motor draws more current, the board’s obstruction sensing kicks in, and the gate backs off.
- Intermittent operation, worse on cold mornings. Failing motor bearings make starting torque unpredictable. You’ll notice it opens fine at noon but struggles at 6 a.m. when the temperature has dropped and the grease has thickened.
- Unusual grinding or squealing from the operator housing. That’s the gear train or the motor shaft bearings wearing out. By the time you hear it, the motor is on borrowed time and the gears are usually scored.
- Burning smell or hot housing after a cycle. A motor drawing excessive current generates real heat. If the operator housing feels hotter than a sunbaked fence post in July, shut the breaker off and stop using it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what a Ghost Controls motor replacement in Torrance generally runs, parts and labor together:
- Motor only replacement (AXDP/AXP swing models): $450 – $650 installed
- Motor replacement (SLDP/SLP slide models): $550 – $850 installed, depending on gear condition
- Motor plus gear assembly (recommended when both show wear): add $120 – $250
- Full operator replacement when the board or arm are also failing: $950 – $1,400 installed
The spread comes down to which exact model is on the gate, whether the gear assembly is reusable, and what the existing mounting looks like. Some Torrance homes have operators installed in the 2000s with brackets that need modification to accept a current motor. You get a written price before any work begins, and that price covers removal of the old motor, installation of the new one, travel calibration, and testing through at least ten full cycles. We don’t open up an operator and come back with a larger number.
The guarantee is simple: every Ghost Controls motor replacement we do carries a written one-year guarantee. If it fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it’s been that way since 2008.
One more thing worth saying plainly: Ghost Controls motors are not something to wire up wrong. These operators run on 12V DC from a transformer, but the boards and motor wiring carry enough current to damage equipment or shock someone if connections are made incorrectly. We’re not going to tell you this is a weekend project. If you’ve been burned before by a generalist who treats gate work as a side job, we’re the outfit that fixes it right the first time.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things a homeowner can safely check before calling: breaker position, battery condition on solar-equipped models, and whether the manual release is engaged. That’s about where we’d stop. Ghost Controls motor replacement involves disconnecting a torqued drivetrain, timing the travel limits precisely, and re-securing the operator to its mount, and if the gate drops or the arm is under tension, the risk is a crushed finger or a damaged gate leaf.
We’ve taken over jobs where a homeowner watched a YouTube video, replaced a motor, and left the limit switches a half-turn off. The gate worked for a week, then drove itself into the fence post. The repair cost more than the original replacement would have. If you’re not certain about the wiring or the mechanical alignment, call us at (424) 757-9824. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a motor issue or something simpler, and if it’s simpler, we’ll say so. Lonnie Burke and our Torrance crew have been through enough of these to know the difference in about five minutes on a call.
FAQs
In Torrance’s salt air and mild winters, a Ghost Controls motor typically lasts 6 to 10 years with regular maintenance, slightly less if the gate is within a block or two of the coast where marine layer corrosion works faster. We see motors fail earlier on gates that are undersized for the leaf weight or that cycle more than 30 times a day.
Sometimes, if the failure is just worn brushes or a failed bearing that hasn’t scored the armature, it’s repairable, but most motors we see at the replacement stage have damage to the commutator or windings that makes repair a short-term patch. We’ll inspect it and give you a straight answer on whether it’s worth fixing or replacing, and you’ll get a written price for whichever way you choose. Call (424) 757-9824 for an honest assessment.
A straightforward swing gate motor replacement takes about 2 to 3 hours on-site for one of our technicians. Slide operators run longer because of the gear and chain or belt interface. We schedule a specific arrival window and we answer the phone when you call to confirm it.
Yes. We keep common Ghost Controls AXDP, AXP, and SLDP motor assemblies on our trucks and at our Torrance shop. Less common parts may take 2 to 5 business days to source, and we’ll tell you the timeline before you commit to anything. Carver Gate Repair Torrance is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we work on their systems weekly, along with LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing equipment.
