Get your free estimateGhost Controls Access Control Installation: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
Ghost Controls access control installation in Torrance typically runs $275 to $650 installed, depending on which module you need and whether wiring or a new power run is required. If your keypad, receiver, or vehicle sensor has quit responding, we usually have the right Ghost Controls-compatible part on the truck and can get you back to opening the gate the same day. Most Torrance owners discover the failure the hard way: they pull up to the gate, punch the keypad, and nothing happens. Or the remote works but the keypad doesn’t. Or the gate opens on its own at 2 a.m. because the receiver board has started picking up stray signals off the marine layer that rolls through the South Bay.
We stock Ghost Controls access control components and install them across Torrance, from Old Torrance to Southwood to Walteria. The salt air off the Pacific is hard on exposed keypads and photocell housings, and we see corrosion-related failures here more than almost any other market around Los Angeles County. If your Ghost Controls opener still runs but the access control piece has failed, this page explains exactly what we do, what it costs, and how fast we can get to it.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls builds its access control line around three main components: the AXDP wireless keypad, the AXR remote receiver (single and dual channel), and the vehicle exit sensor loop. These integrate with the Ghost Controls gate opener arm itself, which means the access control part has to match the opener’s generation. If your opener arm says AX1, AX2, or DTP1 on the label, you need the AX-series accessories. If it’s an older Ghost Controls setup from before the AX naming convention, we’ll match it by the receiver frequency printed on the circuit board, which is the surest way to avoid a mismatch.
Here’s the gotcha we see regularly in Torrance: Ghost Controls uses a rolling-code receiver on the opener, and the add-on wireless keypad has its own receiver that pairs to the opener’s learn button. If the opener board was replaced at some point by another brand, or if the opener is running an aftermarket board, a new Ghost Controls keypad will not pair no matter how many times you press the learn button. That’s a real compatibility issue, and it’s the first thing we check before quoting a part. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents for the most common Ghost Controls access control failures. For receivers and exit sensors, a good aftermarket unit often outperforms the OEM part in coastal conditions because the housings are sealed better. For keypads, we prefer the Ghost Controls OEM part because the keypad face buttons hold up longer than most aftermarket units.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
- The keypad works intermittently, especially after rain or heavy fog. This almost always means moisture has gotten into the keypad housing and is shorting the membrane contacts. In neighborhoods like Seaside Ranchos and the streets off Newton Street, we see this after every wet winter. The fix is usually a sealed replacement keypad, not just new batteries.
- The remote opens the gate from 50 feet away but the keypad does nothing from 5 feet. The keypad receiver module inside the keypad has failed, or the keypad and opener board have lost their pairing. If the keypad has power and the buttons beep but the gate won’t move, the pairing is gone. We can re-pair in ten minutes or swap the keypad if the board is dead.
- The gate opens on its own at random times, usually at night. This is the receiver board picking up interference. In Torrance, the marine layer combined with a lot of wireless traffic from the Port of Los Angeles and Torrance Refinery area creates the perfect environment for stray signals. A failing receiver starts interpreting those signals as “open.” Newer Ghost Controls receivers have better filtering, but if you have an older board, replacement is the only real fix. This is not something to ignore, because a gate that opens itself defeats the whole purpose of having a gate.
- The exit sensor loop has stopped detecting your car, so you have to get out and use the keypad or remote. The loop wire under the driveway has broken, or the detector module in the control box has failed. We test the loop first before quoting a part, because sometimes the wire is fine and the problem is a $75 detector module rather than a full loop replacement.
- The keypad lights up and the gate opener clicks, but the gate doesn’t move. The access control is actually working. The problem is downstream, in the opener arm or the limit switch. We’ll confirm the diagnosis before we sell you anything, because there’s no point replacing a working keypad.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Ghost Controls access control installation costs in Torrance, parts and labor included.
| Part | Typical Installed Price | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless keypad (OEM Ghost Controls AXDP) | $275 to $390 | Keypad, mounting hardware, pairing to existing opener, weather sealing |
| Remote receiver board (single channel) | $220 to $330 | Receiver, wiring to opener, programming of remotes and keypad |
| Vehicle exit sensor loop detector | $180 to $290 | Detector module, testing of existing loop, wiring and calibration |
| Full loop wire replacement (if needed) | $450 to $650 | Saw-cutting, new loop wire, sealant, detector wiring, calibration |
| Complete access control package (keypad, receiver, exit sensor) | $600 to $1,100 | Everything above, fully programmed and tested |
The price range depends on what’s already in the ground and how much wiring is still serviceable. A keypad on an existing post with a straight wire run is the bottom of the range. A loop replacement that requires saw-cutting across a concrete driveway in Walteria or West Torrance is the top. Every quote is written, and we hand it to you before any work starts. The number on that quote is the number on the invoice. If the access control installation fails within the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can check safely without opening the opener cover: the keypad batteries, the keypad’s physical condition (cracks, moisture inside the housing), and whether the opener itself is plugged in and running. If the keypad face is cracked or water has gotten behind the buttons, you can stop troubleshooting. That keypad needs replacement.
Beyond that, this work gets into low-voltage but sensitive territory. The receiver board and exit sensor loop detector wire directly into the opener’s control board, and one crossed wire can take out a working opener. The loop detector in particular has a calibration sequence that requires a meter and some experience to get right. Ghost Controls access control installation is not the place to learn by trial and error. If you’re not sure, call Lonnie Burke and the team at (424) 757-9824. We’ll talk you through what you’re seeing, and if we need to come out, we’ll give you a written price first.
FAQs
In Torrance’s coastal climate, a Ghost Controls keypad typically lasts 4 to 7 years before the membrane buttons or internal board start to fail. Receiver boards run about 6 to 10 years, but the marine layer and local RF interference can shorten that on older units. Call (424) 757-9824 and we can tell you if your unit is reaching the end of its expected life.
In most cases, no. Once moisture has gotten into the board or the membrane has worn through, there is no reliable repair. We’ll always test the unit first and tell you honestly if a re-pair or wiring fix will work before we recommend replacement. Estimates are free.
A keypad or receiver swap takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the condition of the existing wiring. A loop wire replacement across a concrete driveway takes a day, including the saw-cutting, wire pull, sealant, and calibration. We’ll give you the time frame when we quote the job.
Yes. We carry Ghost Controls keypads, receiver boards, and exit sensor detectors as standard truck stock in Torrance, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems. If you have a common AX-series Ghost Controls setup, there’s a strong chance we can complete the repair on the first visit. Call (424) 757-9824 and we’ll confirm before we dispatch.
