We repair and replace Elite keypads and intercom systems throughout Torrance, and we stock the common Elite-compatible parts on our trucks. Most keypad or intercom repairs run between $260 and $480 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, a circuit board, or the full intercom module. The failure usually announces itself in one of three ways: the keypad stops opening the gate, the intercom goes dead or crackles, or the gate only responds to remotes but not the call box.
The salt air off the Pacific does a number on outdoor electronics in Torrance. We see it most in neighborhoods closer to the coast, where the terminal connections behind older Elite keypads corrode faster than inland. When we open up a call box here, we expect some level of oxidation. It’s not a defect. It’s the environment. That’s also why a generic repair shop that doesn’t work on Elite hardware every week will often misdiagnose the symptom as a motor problem, when the real culprit is the keypad’s corroded contact or a failing intercom board.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite builds its keypads and intercoms around a few core series, and the good news is most of the field hardware is backward-compatible. If you have an Elite SL-3000, SL-3000W, or the newer Mirage series, the keypad and intercom components are largely interchangeable. The older Elite dial-up entry systems are a different story. Those came with a hardwired telephone module that doesn’t take the newer digital keypads without a retrofit kit.
Here’s the gotcha we want Torrance owners to avoid: keypad compatibility is not universal across the Elite line. The Elite 3-button and 10-button digital keypads look nearly identical from ten feet away, but they speak different languages. The 3-button uses a simple relay close signal. The 10-button sends a coded data pulse. If someone installs the wrong one because “they look the same,” the gate will either ignore the keypad or behave erratically. We match by the part number on the back of the unit and the model plate inside the operator housing, not by eye. When a customer calls us in Torrance, we ask for photos of both before we even roll the truck. Saves everyone time.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: we install genuine Elite parts when the customer wants factory original, and we’re glad to do it. But for older Elite systems, a quality aftermarket keypad from a supplier we’ve vetted can be the smarter spend, especially when the factory unit has been discontinued. We’ll tell you straight which way we’d go and why, with the price for both options in front of you before any parts get ordered.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad entries intermittently work or take multiple tries. The most common cause is a failing membrane switch inside the keypad face, worsened by UV exposure and moisture intrusion around the housing. In Torrance’s coastal humidity, the contacts can also pick up a fine layer of salt film that interferes with signal continuity.
- Gate responds to the keypad but not the call box, or vice versa. This points to a wiring issue at the shared terminal block inside the operator, or a board-level failure in the intercom module. It’s rarely the gate motor itself, and replacing the motor wouldn’t fix it.
- Intercom audio crackles, drops, or carries a constant hum. On Elite systems we see either a failing speaker diaphragm or corrosion on the audio wiring. The constant hum is usually a ground fault at the intercom’s power supply.
- The keypad backlight is on, but no numbers register. A dead digitizer on an older Elite keypad. The board is receiving power, but it’s not reading inputs. Field repair attempts on these rarely last, so replacement is the honest recommendation.
- Visitor at the call box, and their voice cuts out mid-call. Classic symptom of a failing intercom amplifier board. On Elite units, the amplifier tends to degrade before the microphone or speaker, and it presents exactly like this.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Torrance, a straightforward Elite keypad replacement runs about $260 to $320, including parts and labor. A full intercom module swap lands between $380 and $480, depending on whether we’re also running new wiring or just replacing the unit itself. If both the keypad and the intercom board are toast, you’re at the top of that range. We give you an itemized written price before any work starts, so you know exactly what the part costs and exactly what the labor costs. The number doesn’t move at the door.
Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. It’s a written guarantee, not a handshake. If the repair fails inside a full year, we come back and make it right at no charge. The parts we install carry their own manufacturer warranty as well, and we’ll register that for you so it’s on file. We don’t bury the price in a “package deal” or pad the quote with services you didn’t ask for. You need your Elite keypad working. That’s the job.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things safe to check on your own. Start with the keypad’s physical condtion. Cracked housing, missing button caps, or a loose bezel are signs water has gotten where it shouldn’t. You can also confirm the breaker feeding the operator is on and the keypad is receiving power. Past that, we’d stop. These are low-voltage components, so the shock hazard is minimal, but the diagnosis isn’t. Every time you open the operator cover and start probing the keypad wiring, you risk crossing a lead on the controller board. A shorted controller on an Elite system becomes a far more expensive problem than a failed keypad. And if your gate is a swing gate, the arm itself is under mechanical load whenever the operator is live. Keep your hands clear.
What looks like a keypad failure is sometimes a failed external antenna, a broken loop detector, or a relay that’s sticking in the main board. We’ve made those misdiagnoses before, which is why we don’t tell people to start swapping parts on a hunch. Call us at (424) 757-9824. We’ll come out, test the system end to end, and tell you what’s actually wrong. If the gate isn’t right, we’re not done.
FAQs
Elite keypads typically last between five and eight years in Torrance’s coastal environment before the housing degrades or the contacts corrode, while the intercom modules run closer to seven to ten years with regular use. The proximity to salt air shrinks that lifespan by a year or two compared to inland neighborhoods in LA County. If your system is past eight years old and acting up, replacement usually beats repeated repairs.
We can repair select Elite keypads when the failure is isolated to the wiring, the terminal block, or a corroded contact that hasn’t damaged the board. If the membrane switch or the digitizer is failing, replacement is almost always the better call because the repair cost approaches the replacement cost and won’t carry the same one-year guarantee. We’ll tell you which path makes sense, not which one makes us more money.
A keypad swap typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, including testing the gate through a full open and close cycle. An intercom module replacement runs one to two hours depending on wiring, and whether we’re also pulling new communication cable to the house unit. We schedule a two-hour window so we’re not rushing the test work on the back end.
We stock common Elite keypad and intercom components on our service trucks, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. The most common Elite boards and keypad models ride along with us every day. Uncommon or discontinued parts we can usually source within a day or two through our supplier network, but we’ll tell you the lead time before you commit to anything. Call (424) 757-9824 for a free estimate, and we’ll confirm what’s needed for your Elite model.
