A BFT gate motor replacement in Torrance typically runs $850 to $1,450 installed, depending on the model and whether you’re replacing just the operator or the full kit with control board. We stock BFT-compatible motors and parts on our trucks, so most swaps are done the same day we diagnose the failure. The most common scenario we see: the gate starts moving slower for a few weeks, then stops responding entirely after a hot afternoon or a heavy fog cycle near the coast. You hear the control board click, but the motor won’t turn. That’s usually the capacitor or the motor windings, and both are replaceable without scrapping the whole system.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This guide covers the BFT operator lines most common in Torrance driveways: the Deimos series (Deimos BT A400 and A600), the Phobos swing and slide operators, and the older IGEA and SUB units still running in neighborhoods like Seaside Ranchos and Southwood. BFT labels their motors with a model code on the side of the operator housing. Before you order anything, take a photo of that label. A Deimos A400 motor will not bolt into an IGEA chassis without modification, even though both are 24V systems. We see that mismatched-parts mistake at least once a month from owners who shopped by photo alone.
OEM BFT motors are built to exact shaft and capacitor specs. They cost more, but they fit without shims or wiring splices. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist for the Deimos line, and we’ve installed them with good results over the last several years. The aftermarket option typically saves $120 to $200 on the part. We stock both and will show you the exact price difference before you commit.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate moves slower than normal in one direction. This usually points to worn motor brushes or a failing capacitor. The motor develops more resistance over time, and the control board compensates by pushing more current until something gives.
- Humming sound, but no movement. The capacitor has likely failed. The motor gets voltage but can’t generate the starting torque to move the gate leaf. This is the most common BFT Deimos failure we replace in Torrance.
- Gate stops mid-cycle and reverses on its own. The motor’s thermal overload is tripping. In our coastal climate, salt corrosion on the motor housing accelerates heat buildup, especially on unshaded west-facing installations in upper Torrance.
- Burning smell from the operator box. Motor windings are overheating. Do not keep cycling the gate. Power it down at the breaker and call us. Continued operation can take out the control board too, and that doubles the repair cost.
- Gate opens but won’t close without pressing the remote twice. The motor’s limit switch reference points are drifting, which on a BFT means the encoder or mechanical stops need resetting. Sometimes the motor itself is fine and the fix is a re-calibration. We figure that out before quoting a full replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Torrance, an installed BFT gate motor replacement runs $850 to $1,450. The breakdown matters, so here it is:
- BFT-compatible motor unit: $350 to $650, OEM on the higher end, aftermarket equivalent on the lower.
- Control board replacement (when needed): $150 to $300. We only quote this if the board tested bad on our meter.
- Labor: $250 to $450. This includes removing the old motor, installing the new one, re-setting limits, and load-testing the gate through 10 full cycles.
- Written guarantee: Included on every repair, good for a full year. If the motor fails inside that window, we come back and fix it free. No charge, no argument.
You get a written price before any work starts. That number doesn’t move at the door. Lonnie Burke set that rule years ago, and it’s held across every job, including the ones where we’ve had to work through rusted bolts and seized mounting plates. The salt air off the Pacific is rough on steel, and Torrance gates show it.
DIY or Call Us?
BFT gate motors run on 24V control voltage in most residential models, which is safer than line voltage, but the capacitor inside can still hold a charge after power is off. Touching the wrong terminal can give you a jolt. And a gate that drops because the motor or limit switch was installed wrong can hurt someone. This is not a torsion-spring-level hazard like a garage door, but it’s not a light fixture either. If your BFT unit has a capacitor the size of a soda can, leave the terminals alone.
What you can safely do: note the model label, check for visible corrosion, and listen for the hum-versus-click distinction. That helps us come prepared. Then call us at (424) 757-9824. We’ll match your BFT model over the phone, confirm what’s on the truck, and give you a straight arrival window. If the gate isn’t right, we’re not done.
FAQs
A properly maintained BFT motor in coastal Torrance lasts 7 to 10 years. Units installed without a sun shield or within a few blocks of the ocean tend to fail closer to the 6 to 7-year mark because salt corrosion accelerates capacitor and wiring degradation. We also service LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your BFT is too far gone, we’ll show you the replacement math.
Some BFT motor failures are repairable. Worn brushes, a failed capacitor, or corroded power leads can be replaced without swapping the entire motor. But if the windings are burned or the armature is scored, rebuild costs exceed replacement cost. We test every motor on the bench before quoting repair versus replacement. Call (424) 757-9824 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense for your unit.
Most BFT motor replacements in Torrance are done in 2 to 3 hours on site. That includes removal, installation, limit-setting, and load testing. If the control board also needs replacing, add about 45 minutes.
We stock the most common BFT Deimos and Phobos motors on our service trucks. Less common IGEA and SUB parts may require a 1 to 2-day order from our supplier. We confirm availability before we dispatch, so you’ll know before we arrive whether the part is in hand.
